It’s warming up here in the south … 85 degrees today …
Which brings summer to mind. Ahhh! Flowers blooming … birds singing … wearing sandals … trying on bathing suits … screeech!!!
The dreaded swim suit scourge. White pasty skin. Stubbly legs. A stomach that hasn’t seen daylight since last October. It’s enough to ruin your Girl Scouts thin mints orgy.
Here’s how I try to manage the pain.
4 Sets a Day, 5 Minutes Each
Starting in March, I add about 20 minutes of targeted exercises per day, divided up into four separate sets. Breaking them up like that means I can fit them in anywhere … while I’m heating up something in the microwave … waiting on the phone … taking a few minutes before dinner. I’ve found I can even manage a set of 25 squats while I’m brushing my teeth.
Splitting Up Sets Makes It More Doable
The best thing, though, is that splitting them up makes the whole thing less intimidating and I don’t put it off. I don’t know about you, but when I have a longer work-out, I tend to procrastinate. Something always comes up and I keep waiting for that ‘right moment’. Which, of course, never comes.
I personally focus on my glutes, obliques, and triceps, because that’s where I need the most work. I have go-to exercises I use when I’m in a hurry … squats, planks, and side bends … and YouTube videos for when I have more time to pick and choose.
Challenge Your Girlfriends
This season, my mom, my sister, and I are doing the challenge. I may or may not have bullied them into it. We each have different exercises, but the goal is to do our sets each day without fail. We each put five dollars in the pot and whoever is the most consistent that week wins the money. Of course, it’s not about the money, but the accountability that comes with it. And face it, it’s just fun to beat your mom and your sister at anything.
The beauty is that if you’re already doing a work-out, but want to get that little extra oomph before you put on your swimsuit, you can do this in addition to your current work-out, or on the days you don’t go to the gym.
So get a couple girlfriends and give it a try. You have nothing to lose. Except inches.
One YouTuber I love to work out to is Cassey Ho with Blogilates. She’s fun, she’s cute; you just feel happier after you work out with her.
Here are a few of my favorites:
So, it’s almost 1pm, and I’m half-way through for the day. My butt, my waist, and my upper arms thank me. I. feel. wonderful.
Swim suit, you don’t scare me. Bring it on, beyotch.
